Perstorp Plans to Construct a Biogas Plant at its Swedish Polyol's Facility

A biogas plant is planned for the Perstorp industrial area. Built and operated by Biokraft, the facility will produce 130 GWh of biomethane annually and is set to be completed in 2027.

Biogas is an important piece of the puzzle in Perstorp's efforts to switch to renewable and recycled raw materials, so contributing to an increased production of this important raw material is something that we are very happy about. We believe that biogas production in Sweden needs to be increased fivefold to satisfy the industry's needs, and this initiative is a step on the way

The availability of competitively priced biogas is essential for the transition of the chemical industry and other sectors of Swedish basic industry from fossil to biogenic and recycled raw materials. For instance, after the completion of Project Air, Perstorp's biogas requirements will be around 3 TWh per year, which is 1.5 times the current Swedish biogas production.

The new plant will have a capacity of 130 GWh of biomethane and 17,000 tonnes of liquid CO2 annually, with completion expected in 2027. Plans include connecting the plant to the gas grid to distribute gas to western Sweden and northern Europe. The facility will process approximately 300,000 tonnes of substrate per year, primarily manure and agricultural residues. The same amount of processed biofertilizer will be produced, which will be returned to agriculture to supplement or replace fossil fertilizers, contributing to the green transition

We are very pleased to be able to take another step towards our long-term goal of three TWh by 2030 and have the opportunity to contribute to the green transition in industry. Perstorp is a pioneer in Swedish industry as an advocate for biogas and we are proud to be able to take the next step in this project. Perstorp municipality is a very suitable place to build a biogas plant. It is close to Northern Europe, has good road connections and is located in a landscape where there is good access to manure and organic waste from surrounding farms
