Henkel has reached a significant sustainability milestone by achieving carbon-neutral production at its flagship Adhesive Technologies manufacturing facilities in Kurkumbh, India, and Gebkim, Türkiye, marking a major step towards its goal of decarbonising global operations by 2030.
The company has successfully eliminated both Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions at the two sites through a combination of full electrification, energy-efficiency improvements and the adoption of 100% renewable electricity.
At the Kurkumbh facility, Henkel replaced furnace oil-based thermic fluid heaters with high-efficiency electric systems and upgraded its energy infrastructure through heat-load optimisation, advanced heat exchangers and enhanced electrical capacity. These measures, combined with renewable power sourcing, eliminated approximately 11,300 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions annually. Meanwhile, the Gebkim plant in Türkiye replaced a natural gas-fired boiler with a high-efficiency electric boiler and transitioned entirely to renewable electricity, reducing annual emissions by around 956 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent while maintaining production efficiency.
The achievement supports Henkel’s science-based climate targets, which focus on energy efficiency, electrification, fossil fuel phase-out and renewable energy adoption across its global manufacturing network.
Company executives highlighted that the projects demonstrate how sustainability objectives can be translated into tangible operational improvements without compromising safety, quality or productivity.
By scaling fossil fuel-free manufacturing and renewable energy integration, Henkel aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of its production footprint while supporting customers’ sustainability ambitions.
