Dow and Adient have introduced SPECFLEX™ REN, an advanced polyurethane seating foam solution incorporating renewable feedstocks through an ISCC PLUS-certified mass balance approach.

The new product reflects both companies' commitment to supporting the automotive industry's transition towards more sustainable manufacturing practices. By enabling the incorporation of bio-circular attributed raw materials into the seating foam value chain, SPECFLEX™ REN offers manufacturers a practical route to reducing reliance on fossil-based resources while maintaining established performance standards.

Commenting on the launch, Selamawit Belli, MobilityScience™ Marketing Manager at Dow, stated that the introduction of SPECFLEX™ REN helps industry partners incorporate renewable feedstocks into their production processes through a certified mass balance system, supporting broader decarbonisation objectives without sacrificing product quality or functionality.

The foam is produced using ISCC PLUS-certified bio-circular attributed feedstocks, which are allocated through a mass balance methodology to replace a portion of conventional fossil-derived inputs. This approach can contribute to a lower product carbon footprint compared with traditional polyurethane foam solutions and supports automotive manufacturers in achieving their environmental and sustainability targets.

Key Benefits of SPECFLEX™ REN

  • Provides levels of comfort, durability and resilience comparable to those of standard seating foam products.

  • Supports sustainability initiatives through the use of ISCC PLUS-certified bio-circular attributed feedstocks managed under a verified mass balance framework.

  • Helps reduce dependence on fossil-based raw materials while maintaining performance requirements for automotive seating applications.

The development aligns with wider efforts across the automotive sector to create lower-carbon, resource-efficient mobility solutions, particularly as electric vehicle production continues to expand globally.
