Covestro has officially opened a new Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Application Development Centre in Guangzhou, China, reinforcing the company’s strategy of bringing innovation and technical collaboration closer to customers across the Asia-Pacific region.

The new facility forms part of an integrated three-site TPU network comprising the company’s regional research and development centre in Changhua and its newly operational TPU production site in Zhuhai, which is expected to become Covestro’s largest TPU manufacturing facility globally in the coming years. Strategically positioned near major industrial clusters in South China, the Guangzhou centre will primarily support fast-growing sectors such as consumer electronics, automotive, footwear, specialty films, paint protection films (PPF) and advanced extrusion applications.

The centre is equipped with advanced processing simulation lines for extrusion and injection moulding, enabling customers to accelerate product testing, material modification and commercialisation under real production conditions. Covestro stated that the facility is intended to improve responsiveness, shorten development cycles and strengthen collaborative innovation with regional customers and partners.

According to Dr Andrea Maier-Richter, Global Head of TPU at Covestro, the centre represents a key pillar in the company’s long-term TPU growth strategy and will help develop emerging applications in areas such as robotics, healthcare and mobility solutions.

The Guangzhou site also integrates expertise from Covestro’s Engineering Plastics and Specialty Films businesses, allowing customers to benefit from additional compounding, colour and film development capabilities. The investment further demonstrates Covestro’s commitment to sustainable and circular material solutions, including the expansion of its Desmopan® CQ TPU portfolio based on alternative raw materials attributed through mass balancing.
