Covestro has introduced a fire-resistant thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) specifically designed for use in cables. Desmopan FR has been developed specifically for cable jacket applications in industries where fire safety is of utmost importance, such as automotive charging and consumer electronics. Partially biobased grades are also offered as an option.

The newly developed material is free of halogens and exhibits low smoke properties. The company stated that it provides customised performance levels, enabling the attainment of a favourable equilibrium between durability, safety, and design flexibility. It possesses chemical resistance, a high level of mechanical strength to endure substantial strain, and adherence to various international regulations.

“At Covestro, we recognise the challenges in the cable industry in achieving the right balance of flame retardancy and physical performance,” said Kevin Ho, Covestro’s Asia Pacific head of TPU. “With the launch of our Desmopan FR TPU series, we are expanding our TPU portfolio in wire and cable with flame-retardant solutions that address the evolving market needs, particularly in the dynamic Asia-Pacific region. This enables our customers to stay ahead of the curve by meeting stringent fire safety requirements while aligning with sustainability.”
