BASF, Sanfang and Liji Join Forces on GRS-Certified TPU Films to Cut Footwear Emissions

BASF, Sanfang Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. and Liji Advanced Materials Co., Ltd. have entered into a strategic collaboration to accelerate sustainable material solutions for the footwear industry, with the shared objective of supporting net-zero emissions by 2050. Announced in Taiwan, China, on 11 December 2025, the partnership was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding focused on the joint development of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) products that combine high performance with reduced environmental impact.
The first major milestone of the collaboration is the launch of a TPU film certified under the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), an internationally recognised system that verifies recycled content and ensures full traceability and transparency across the supply chain. These GRS-certified TPU films allow footwear brands to incorporate recycled materials without compromising on quality, durability or design flexibility, enabling partners to broaden their product portfolios and bring compliant, sustainable products to global markets.
The initiative draws on the complementary strengths of the three companies: BASF’s global leadership and expertise in sustainable and performance materials, Sanfang Chemical’s long-standing capabilities in recycled polyester polyols and circular economy solutions, and Liji Advanced Materials’ advanced manufacturing know-how and deep understanding of high-performance TPU films for footwear applications.
Company executives highlighted the collaboration as a win-win model that delivers tangible value to brands and consumers while setting new benchmarks for sustainable materials. Looking ahead, the partners aim to further integrate technological innovation, resource sharing and rigorous quality control to scale up the use of recycled materials in footwear and related applications, reinforcing the transition towards a circular plastics economy and lower carbon emissions across the industry.
