BASF has introduced its new Reduced Product Carbon Footprint (ReducedPCF) Elastollan® thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) portfolio in the Asia Pacific region, aimed at helping customers lower the carbon footprint of their products without sacrificing material performance. The newly launched TPU grades target key sectors including footwear, sports and leisure, and cable and wire applications, while supporting growing regional demand for more sustainable performance materials.

Manufactured at BASF’s Shanghai production site, the portfolio forms part of the company’s local-for-local strategy in Asia Pacific, enabling shorter supply chains, enhanced supply security and closer customer support across regional markets.

BASF stated that the ReducedPCF Elastollan grades are produced through several active carbon-reduction measures, including the use of lower-emission utilities and fossil feedstocks with reduced product carbon footprints.

Selected products manufactured in Shanghai may also incorporate site-specific mass-balance biomethane to further reduce emissions. According to the company, the new grades deliver an estimated 10–30% reduction in product carbon footprint compared with conventional Elastollan TPU grades, while maintaining equivalent mechanical and technical properties.

BASF noted that the product carbon footprint methodology follows Together for Sustainability (TfS) guidelines and ISO 14067 standards, ensuring transparent and standardised carbon accounting. Rohit Roop Ghosh, Vice President, Business Management TPU, Performance Materials Asia Pacific at BASF, stated that the launch reflects the company’s commitment to supporting customers’ sustainability goals through innovation, transparent emissions data, local manufacturing capabilities and collaboration throughout the value chain.
