Amcor, a global provider of responsible packaging solutions, is encouraging beverage manufacturers to reassess their closure selections in preparation for the European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the growing adoption of reuse and return systems.
The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) establishes reuse targets for beverage packaging, requiring that 10% of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages be offered in reusable packaging systems by 1 January 2030, with the target increasing to 40% by 2040.
At the same time, deposit return schemes (DRS) are being introduced or expanded across multiple markets to support the collection and reuse of beverage packaging. Under these systems, consumers pay a refundable deposit on beverage containers, which is reimbursed when the empty containers are returned to designated collection points, helping improve collection rates and the quality of recovered materials.
Uli Kobert, Product Line Director at Amcor, said: “PPWR is accelerating the shift towards reuse systems, and that has real implications for packaging choices. Amcor supports customers with closure solutions for reusable PET and glass bottles, alongside technical expertise, to help them prepare for deposit return schemes and the operational realities of reuse, delivering responsible packaging solutions without compromising on performance”.
As beverage manufacturers transition to reusable packaging models, performance requirements for packaging become more demanding. Reusable containers must withstand repeated washing, temperature fluctuations, and multiple filling cycles, increasing wear and requiring closures that deliver consistent sealing performance throughout their service life.
In well-established deposit return schemes (DRS), collection rates can be exceptionally high. Germany is widely recognised as one of the world's most successful DRS markets, achieving return rates of around 98% for eligible single-use beverage containers through an extensive return network and an effective deposit incentive.
