Vita Group and Manchester University Form Partnership to Develop Sustainable Automotive Foams
The Vita Group, a leading provider of flexible polyurethane foam solutions for the automotive, furniture, bedding and industrial sectors, has formed a strategic partnership with The University of Manchester to support the newly established The Vita Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Sustainable Automotive Polymers.
Jointly supported by The Vita Group and the Royal Academy of Engineering, the three-year Research Chair will focus on advancing more sustainable polyurethane materials for transport applications, helping to accelerate the transition towards a more circular and resource-efficient automotive sector.
Working closely with Vita’s innovation and sustainability teams, they will develop a research programme aimed at bridging fundamental polymer science with practical industrial applications. The partnership will explore new approaches to sustainable automotive foam design, including the incorporation of recycled content, improved material separation technologies, bio-based and carbon-negative polymer solutions and emerging chemical recycling methods.
Over the next three years, Vita and The University of Manchester will also collaborate on projects focused on polymer sustainability, recycling and material deconstruction technologies, alongside advanced life cycle assessment methodologies. The research is expected to contribute to the development of future products, support the recovery and reuse of end-of-life materials and create robust sustainability data that can help customers make more informed decisions.
A key feature of the programme will be the use of systems-based sustainability assessment tools to evaluate the environmental, social and economic impacts of potential innovations. This will ensure that new technologies are not only technically viable but also commercially and environmentally sustainable.
Omar Hoek, CEO of The Vita Group, said: “At Vita, sustainability and innovation are central to our strategy. We are committed to rethinking every stage of the foam lifecycle, from design and manufacturing through to recovery and reuse, helping to drive greater circularity across our industry. The establishment of The Vita Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Sustainable Automotive Polymers is an important milestone in that journey. Through our partnership with Professor Shaver and The University of Manchester, we aim to accelerate the development of new technologies and materials that can support a more sustainable future for the automotive sector.
This collaboration represents a significant step forward, not only for Vita but for the wider polyurethane industry. By working across the value chain and alongside our customers, we hope to bring innovative, more sustainable solutions to market and help build a future-fit industry that benefits from the opportunities of a circular economy.”
By combining academic expertise with industrial insight, the collaboration will help address some of the most significant challenges facing polyurethane foam technologies, including performance requirements, safety considerations and scalability.
The initiative is expected to establish Manchester as a centre of excellence for sustainable polymer engineering while supporting the automotive industry’s broader transition towards circular material solutions. The partnership forms part of Vita’s broader Sustainable Innovation strategy, which focuses on developing next-generation circular foam solutions and supporting the transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon future across the industries it serves.
