ROCKWOOL has announced the acquisition of Swedish technology company ScanArc Plasma Technologies, marking a significant step in advancing sustainable melting technologies and accelerating the decarbonization of its global manufacturing operations. The acquisition builds on a long-standing partnership between the two companies and strengthens ROCKWOOL's strategy to reduce carbon emissions by replacing fossil fuel-based melting processes with electric plasma technology.

ScanArc's advanced plasma technology enables industrial furnaces to achieve temperatures of up to 1,500°C, which are essential for stone wool production. By using low-carbon electricity instead of coal or coke, the technology supports fossil-free melting while helping heavy industries overcome one of their biggest decarbonization challenges. The acquisition also allows ROCKWOOL to integrate this expertise directly into its research, engineering, and manufacturing operations.

A key advantage of the combined solution is its ability to retrofit existing production lines rather than replacing entire melting furnaces. This approach significantly reduces investment costs, minimizes production disruptions, and makes the transition to electrified manufacturing more practical for existing facilities. ROCKWOOL is already finalizing the first full-scale deployment of the technology at its factory in Roermond, the Netherlands, following a successful pilot project at its Flechtingen, Germany facility.

The acquisition reinforces ROCKWOOL's long-term commitment to sustainable manufacturing, innovation, and climate action. By combining ScanArc's plasma expertise with its own global manufacturing capabilities, the company aims to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon production technologies, improve energy efficiency, and support the broader transition of energy-intensive industries toward net-zero emissions while strengthening its competitive position in sustainable building materials.
