Pillow Recycling Initiative Launched by BASF and Tongji University Explores Applications of the Circular Economy

BASF has partnered with Tongji University, one of Shanghai's leading research institutions, and Shanghai Yida Resource Recycling Technology Co., Ltd., a specialist in circular economy solutions, to develop a pillow recycling initiative focused on recovering polyurethane foam from discarded pillows.
The project aims to demonstrate how post-consumer materials can be collected, assessed and redirected into suitable recycling streams for potential reuse in new applications. It also provides students and young people with practical insights into resource recovery and sustainable materials management.
Drawing on BASF's expertise in advanced materials and recycling technologies, alongside Tongji University's academic and research capabilities, the initiative illustrates how waste materials can be transformed into valuable resources.
By collecting and processing used polyurethane foam pillows, the project highlights the potential to extend material lifecycles and reduce waste through effective recycling practices.
Polyurethane is commonly found in products such as furniture, seating, mattresses, bedding and synthetic leather. Achieving greater circularity for these materials depends on a combination of thoughtful product design, effective waste collection systems, suitable recycling technologies and strong collaboration across the value chain.
The partnership underscores a shared ambition to strengthen awareness and understanding of circular economy principles. By bringing together industry knowledge, research expertise and student participation, the initiative demonstrates how cross-sector cooperation can contribute to more resource-efficient and sustainable solutions.
