LMR Naturals by IFF, a global leader in natural ingredients for perfumery, cosmetics, and flavours, has added Tonka Bean CO₂ Absolute to its Conscious Collection. The collection includes 12 highly sustainable and traceable natural ingredients for perfumes and flavours. Tonka Bean CO₂ Absolute is a natural extract with a gourmet flavour profile. This new addition to the perfumer's palette is made from renewable and recycled supercritical CO2 at IFF's extraction facility in Aubrac, France.
"Our CO₂ extraction unit in Aubrac has enabled LMR to develop a collection of extracts that seamlessly blends sustainability with high hedonic profiles for perfumers," stated Bertrand de Préville, general manager of LMR Naturals by IFF. "With the launch of Tonka Bean CO₂ Absolute, we're reaffirming our commitment to planet-conscious supercritical CO₂ extraction and perfumery innovation—underscoring our leadership in premium natural ingredients for fine perfumery."
The new Tonka Bean extract offers improved performance and cost effectiveness. The CO2 extraction technique uses less energy and has a lower environmental impact than standard solvent extraction. It is carried out at low temperatures, produces no petrochemical residue, and protects volatile and sensitive chemicals. The end result is a high-quality extract that captures the original aroma of freshly picked tonka beans while leaving a reduced carbon footprint (-34% cradle-to-gate) than standard Tonka Absolute.
The LMR Tonka Bean CO₂, sourced from the Amazon jungle, adds a natural, warm, and velvety texture to both fine and consumer scents. The ingredient's creamy and cosy qualities appeal to consumers seeking comfort, nostalgia, and a hint of indulgence. Its silky roasted-almond top note and sun-dried hay subtlety, mixed with cocoa undertones, produce a deeper, velvetier smell experience than classic Tonka absolute.
"I love that it brings captivating new dimensions," remarked Alexandra Carlin, IFF's senior perfumer. "It has a brown sugar twist, a flavour of buckwheat, and a delicate chocolate flavour. It's unexpectedly sweet and salty all at once, and it's very intriguing."
Tonka Bean CO₂ is IFF's newest step toward creating the future of scent creation. This announcement comes following the recent opening of the expanded LMR Naturals facility in Grasse, France. The company's €10 million investment in the Grasse facility increases its ability to push naturals innovation in the heart of the world's perfume capital.
LMR Naturals is a trademarked capability inside IFF that was developed in 1983 by Monique Remy and acquired by IFF in 2000 to improve IFF's ability to provide perfumers with high-quality, innovative, and sustainably sourced and produced natural ingredients at reasonable prices. Perfumers all over the world rely on LMR scientists' profound expertise to produce signature fragrances for consumers in a variety of applications including fine perfumery, cosmetics, home care, fabric care, and beauty. LMR Naturals also sells ingredients for flavour purposes.
