Kumho Mitsui Chemicals Expands MDI Capacity to Support Growing Demand and Sustainability Goals

Kumho Mitsui Chemicals, a key producer within the Mitsui Chemicals group, is strengthening its position in the MDI market by further expanding its production capacity. The company manufactures and supplies a broad portfolio of high-performance MDI products, including monomeric, modified and high-viscosity polymeric grades used in automotive parts, elastic fibres and highly flame-retardant insulation materials, as well as commodity polymeric MDI for housing and home appliance insulation.

Following a 200,000-tonne capacity expansion completed in 2024, the facility has been operating at full capacity, underlining the strong demand environment. The newly announced capacity increase will enable Kumho Mitsui Chemicals to better meet rising requirements not only from the automotive sector but also from the growing market for high-performance, flame-retardant insulation materials.

Importantly, the expansion will maximise the use of recycling facilities installed during the previous upgrade, helping to lower greenhouse gas emissions per unit of MDI produced while improving overall energy efficiency. Through these measures, the company aims to reduce its carbon footprint, achieve cost rationalisation and establish a more sustainable production system. Ultimately, Kumho Mitsui Chemicals is seeking to position itself as a global leader in MDI, while Mitsui Chemicals pursues both business expansion and continued enhancement of MDI product performance.
