Kerry, a global leader in taste and nutrition, has inaugurated its new Biotechnology Centre in Leipzig, Germany, to accelerate the development of advanced biotech solutions for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical sectors. The facility marks a significant expansion of Kerry’s global biotechnology infrastructure, complementing its investments and acquisitions over the past two decades, including the 2022 purchase of c-LEcta, a Leipzig-based specialist in enzymes and biotechnology.

Leipzig was chosen due to its strong research ecosystem and skilled biotech workforce. The new centre, directed by Dr. Marc Struhalla, founder of c-LEcta, will employ more than 100 scientists and technical experts, including 34 PhDs. Its focus areas include enzyme and strain identification, strain engineering, fermentation, bioprocess development, scale-up, and production. Leveraging novel enzymes sourced from nature and tailored for specific applications, Kerry aims to address challenges such as ingredient scarcity, production efficiency, human health, and product functionality.

Several biotech innovations have already been commercialised, including ACRYLERASE™, which removes acrylamide from instant coffee; DENARASE®, a leading enzyme for eliminating residual DNA in vaccine and gene therapy manufacturing; and BIOBAKE™, a solution that extends the shelf life and processability of baked goods.

The Leipzig centre will serve as a cornerstone of Kerry’s sustainable nutrition strategy and is coordinated through the company’s Global Innovation Centre in Ireland.

Commenting on the launch, CEO Edmond Scanlon highlighted biotechnology as a transformative frontier, positioning Kerry to lead in delivering next-generation solutions that help customers meet consumer demand for sustainable, functional products.
