Covestro Upgrades Dormagen TDI Plant for Enhanced Sustainability

Covestro is undertaking a significant investment in the Dormagen TDI production plant, the largest in Europe, to modernize its gas-phase technology. As part of this modernization initiative, a new reactor is being installed, designed to produce steam from the reaction process. Once the upgrades are finalized, the plant is expected to achieve an impressive 80% reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional TDI manufacturing methods. This improvement will result in a noteworthy decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, specifically by 22,000 tons per year.

The initial phase of the project has been successfully completed, and the subsequent stages are scheduled to be implemented gradually, ensuring a seamless and continuous supply of TDI to customers by spring 2025. With a current capacity of 300,000 tons per year, the Dormagen TDI plant is already operating with significantly improved efficiency, utilizing 60% less energy and 80% less solvent compared to conventional processes.

"We want to continue to grow in Germany and drive forward the transformation to climate-neutral production. Nevertheless, the general conditions, especially the high energy prices, are making it increasingly difficult for us to make such investments," says Dr. Thorsten Dreier, Member of the Board of Management and Chief Technology Officer at Covestro. "Policymakers must finally take effective measures to restore Germany's competitiveness in terms of energy prices and ensure a reliable basis for the climate-neutral transformation of industry."
