Modernised Ludwigshafen Plant

  • New Plant Enhances Long-Term Supply Security for Customers Worldwide

  • Modernised Facility Expands Production Capacity

  • Renewable electricity cuts the product carbon footprint by an average of 19%

BASF has officially inaugurated its fully modernised acid chlorides and chloroformates (ACCF) production plant at its Ludwigshafen Verbund site. Representing a significant milestone for BASF’s Intermediates division, the upgraded facility combines increased production capacity with improved sustainability and enhanced long-term supply reliability for customers worldwide.

The investment, valued at a low three-digit million-euro amount, involves a comprehensive modernisation of the acid chlorides and chloroformates production infrastructure and increases the Ludwigshafen site’s capacity by approximately 30%. BASF is a leading global manufacturer of these products, operating production facilities in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Yeosu, South Korea.

“The opening of this modernized plant demonstrates BASF’s commitment to investing in competitive and sustainable production assets at our Ludwigshafen Verbund site and in Europe. By combining increased capacity, supply reliability and a significantly reduced product carbon footprint, we are creating value for our customers and supporting their green transformation,” said Mary Kurian, Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE.

The plant’s inauguration also highlights BASF’s successful integration of operational excellence and sustainability. Since 2025, the company has used renewable electricity credits to manufacture its entire Ludwigshafen portfolio of approximately 25 acid chlorides and chloroformates, including all upstream raw-material processes. This transition has lowered the portfolio’s average product carbon footprint by 19% and helps customers advance their Scope 3 emission-reduction targets without affecting product specifications, certifications or ordering procedures.
