BASF is exploring an investment opportunity in MDI production within India
BASF is currently assessing a potential investment in India, reflecting its long-term commitment to supporting the region’s expanding customer base and growing market demand. As part of this process, the company is undertaking an advanced feasibility study into the development of an MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) production facility. To support the proposed project, BASF has secured industrial land in Dahej, Gujarat, through its Indian subsidiary, BASF India Polyurethanes Private Limited.
MDI is a vital raw material used in the manufacture of polyurethane products, which play an important role across a wide range of industries, including construction, refrigeration, automotive manufacturing, furniture production and consumer goods.
Any decision to proceed with the investment will depend on the findings of the feasibility study and will remain subject to the relevant regulatory and corporate approvals.
Dr Stephan Kothrade, Member of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer of BASF SE, said that India remains one of BASF’s most important growth markets, supported by strong demand across a range of industries. He added that the proposed investment would strengthen the company’s manufacturing presence in the region and, in line with its local-for-local strategy, enhance its ability to serve customers in India and neighbouring markets with locally produced MDI.
