BASF India, Green Worms and IPUA Inaugurate Polyurethane Waste Recycling Facility in Kerala

BASF India has launched a new polyurethane (PU) waste recycling facility in Manjeri, Malappuram district, Kerala. The project is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative developed in partnership with Green Worms (Serve Rural) and the Indian Polyurethane Association (IPUA). It aims to strengthen polyurethane recycling in India and promote a circular economy.
The facility focuses on the collection, segregation and mechanical recycling of post-industrial polyurethane waste generated by footwear manufacturers. This waste stream often ends up in landfills due to limited recycling infrastructure. The new facility will help establish a more organised and sustainable polyurethane waste management system.
Through this initiative, BASF India and its partners aim to convert discarded polyurethane materials into useful products. Recycled PU will be used to manufacture indoor floor mats for rural schools across Kerala. This approach supports resource recovery, reduces waste and creates value from discarded industrial materials.
The project also aims to deliver social and economic benefits. During its initial phase, it is expected to benefit approximately 4,000 children from disadvantaged communities. It will also create livelihood opportunities for waste collectors, recyclers and other workers involved in the recycling value chain.
