Austrotherm has commissioned a recycling plant for EPS and XPS insulation materials at its Purbach site. The facility is unique in Austria and marks a further step in strengthening the company’s circular economy strategy. After a successful trial phase, full-scale operations began in 2025. The company expects to return around 100 tonnes of EPS and XPS insulation waste to the production cycle in 2026. The total investment in the project is approximately €1.2 million.
The new recycling plant complements Austrotherm’s existing take-back schemes. Since 2021, the company has offered a nationwide collection service for clean XPS offcuts from construction sites, free of charge, either through direct site collection or delivery to the Purbach facility. In autumn 2024, this service was extended to include EPS insulation materials. This expansion is based on the research project “EPSolutely”, which developed a nationwide logistics concept for EPS recycling in cooperation with partners across the value chain.
