AkzoNobel develops self-cleaning coating for high-end building exteriors

AkzoNobel has introduced a new self-cleaning extrusion coating in China designed to use natural rainfall to remove dust and stains from building exteriors. The TRINAR® SC Series has been developed to support the country's urban renewal initiatives and meet growing demand for premium coatings in the high-end construction market.


The new coating is specifically engineered for buildings with complex curved surfaces and irregular architectural designs. Featuring hydrophilic self-cleaning technology, the TRINAR® SC Series helps maintain a clean, like-new façade while reducing maintenance requirements. It also meets the international AAMA 2605 weatherability standard, providing long-term durability and protection against harsh environmental conditions.


“This is a significant innovation which will enable customers to unlock the long-term value of self-cleaning technology, with no changes to existing customers’ coating lines – and zero compromise on color selection or finish texture,” explains James Kavanagh, Commercial Director of AkzoNobel’s Coil and Extrusion business. He adds that by reducing the frequency of manual high-rise cleaning procedures, the next generation coating can contribute to lowering operation and maintenance costs across a building’s entire lifecycle. It can also help reduce the amount of water, chemicals and maintenance resources typically associated with cleaning building exteriors. This makes it ideally suited for the construction requirements of irregular curtain wall geometries, as well as supporting more sustainable building operations over time.

The factory-applied TRINAR® SC Series is designed to help the construction industry address the growing maintenance challenges associated with China's focus on high-quality, premium buildings. As modern commercial buildings increasingly incorporate complex curved surfaces and unique architectural designs, façade cleaning and long-term maintenance have become more difficult. The new coating helps maintain a cleaner exterior while reducing maintenance requirements for these advanced building structures.

The new coating underwent long-term field testing at an office building project in the Dongying Economic Development Zone, where it consistently demonstrated strong self-cleaning performance throughout the evaluation period. It has also been successfully applied in several premium construction projects, including the 16 Man on Street development in Hong Kong.


Following these successful installations, AkzoNobel plans to expand the use of the TRINAR® SC Series across more high-end building projects, further strengthening its portfolio of high-performance architectural coatings tailored to the evolving needs of China's premium construction market.
